Hello all, this is my first blog here. I'm procrastinating something fierce from studying for my nursing final in school, so I figured I might as well introduce myself. My name is Deanna, I'm 23, and in nursing school. As the blog title implies, I'm pretty new to the adoption scene. I'm not looking to actually adopt just yet (probably within the next 5-10 years) but I figured that, when it comes to learning the ins-and-outs of adoption, you can never start too early.
I'm not even quite sure what direction I want to go in, in regards to adoption. I originally started by looking at international adoption, but the costs seemed prohibitively high. Especially considering that fact that I'm single and likely to remain so when I adopt, so my option of countries is limited.
Domestic infant adoption seems slightly more reasonable, cost-wise, especially since I'm completely open to any gender or race. I have a little bit of that "white people's" phobia of dealing with a AA child's hair but it's nothing that I couldn't learn (unlike a lot of people, it's not even the difference between "white hair" and "black hair" that gets me, I'm just not a hair-doing person. Brushing my own hair and putting it up in a pony-tail is pretty much the extent of my knowledge on that subject)
However, I'm really interested in possibly adopting an older child or sibling group. The only thing that worries me is that I don't have much experience with children, so I'm not sure that taking on an older child right out of the gate is the wisest move I could make. I worry I'll miss something behaviorally/ psychologically that a more experienced parent would have picked up on.
